Role
The role that you are to play in this case study is that of a geospatial professional, working as a contractor to a venture capital partnership. You have no vested interest in the development of the restaurant. The report created is for the use of the partnership and not for public dissemination.
Problem
A group of venture capital partners are trying to decide if they should invest in a new restaurant concept in the county seat of a rural community. The restaurant will feature a tradition country style menu and will not have items associated with other cultural groups such as Italian, Asian or Mexican. The entrees on the menu will range in price from $12 - $21, which would not make it the most expensive restaurant in the community, but one of the higher priced ones. The prices will be higher than traditional fast food restaurants, but will utilize servers and there are alcoholic beverage licenses available in the community. Your consulting company has been retained to determining if this is a sound investment for the partners.
You are to look at the median income levels at the Census Tract level for the region. The region is defined as all contiguous counties to the target county. You will also need to study the ethnic and racial diversity of the communities. You will need to see if there is a sufficient population (at least 5000 people) within a 25-mile radius of the proposed location of the restaurant that have an average median income of $34,000 per year. You must determine if locating a new restaurant in this community is a sound investment and where it should be located (downtown, eastside, northside, etc.) by looking at transportation, population, income levels and any other demographical features you select.
