Tabular Joining Data
Concept: The purpose of this exercise is to join numerical data with a geographic shapefile. The data file will be from the US Census data at the census tract level, you should use ACS data (American Community Survey). You are to join one county at the census tract level to the corresponding tabular data.
Technical Skills Resources:
Downloading Data From U.S. Census Bureau content at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JG-6g3l5EI8miEPsc6VjFgY2qacLXbiO
Joining Data - Shapefile and Tabular Data video content at https://youtu.be/GuGXbzq4mZw and PDF content at https://drive.google.com/open?id=13dHBZp4sF7-VdpGArkla6wIDVviPq2UP
Helpful Information: If you have problem making the join, it is because the field format mismatch, the Joining Data lesson will help you through this issue.
Data: The shapefiles and tabular data will come from the US Census Bureau. Use attribute QT - P3 (Race and Hispanic) if you use the Decennial Census 2010 or B19013 (Median Income) if you use the ACS data; this data will be obtained from the US Census Bureau. Make sure the appropriate shapefile is used with the data download.
Requirements: Provide your instructor with a Map Package as well as an image of the map displaying the county showing census tract and one of the listed attributes.
Grading:
50% attribute table shows the joining correctly completed between the shapefile and census data
50% image displaying the data
Additional points can be obtained for creativity.
