Introduction
The primary purpose of this lesson is to explore how data can be calculated in a field. Secondary content will include how new fields are added into an existing shapefile, simple symbology and querying. Data used in the new field will be from other fields within the attribute table of the shapefile. In this technical lesson several fields in a Census tract shapefile will be combined to create a new field.
To complete this technical skills lesson a census tract shapefile containing information about a single county is required. The data will be based on a recent U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey and will include income and educational attainment information. The shapefile will be supplied to the learner, it was created by downloading census data and completing a tabular join. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kwMZHF_oZm-fHlPKhSRR-0GIpfOEvgP2
This technical skills lesson will explore the male and female populations that have less than a 9th grade education. The file from U.S. Census Bureau separates males, females and levels of education. To do an analysis on our targeted group a new field must be calculated. In the last part of this lesson a query of the data will be completed to compare income and educational levels.
